Eutelsat is redefining professional video delivery with its hybrid GEO-LEO satellite network, combining the broad coverage of Geostationary (GEO) satellites with the low-latency, high-speed capabilities of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) connectivity. This powerful combination is transforming live sports broadcasting, remote news coverage, and OTT content distribution worldwide.
For events in Europe and MENA, the recent inauguration of Eutelsat’s 13° East, HOTBIRD video neighbourhood for professional video services ensures secure, reliable and protected contribution and distribution of premium sports content across an extensive geographic area. With a unique coverage extending across Europe and MENA, the high-power HOTBIRD satellites form one of the largest broadcasting systems in EMEA, reaching more than 160 million TV homes, with over 90% cable and IPTV penetration, and an extended network of distributors equipped to receive the HOTBIRD satellites across the region.
Eutelsat’s OneWeb LEO network is also harnessing strong appeal, with a series of successful live field trials generating huge interest. Most notably, during the historic announcement of Pope Leo XIV, when saturated 4G and 5G networks couldn’t meet demand. Working with partners at Cotelettron and AGTW Broadcast News Agency, the team deployed a nomadic Inster foldable user terminal to transmit live video coverage directly from St Peter’s Square over the OneWeb constellation. The feed was picked up by multiple broadcasters, bringing the breaking news to millions in real time.
“Satellite plays a vital role in the media supply chain, especially for high-profile events where prime quality is a must,” said Aymeric Genty, President of Eutelsat’s Video Business Unit. “With our GEO-LEO hybrid network, Eutelsat is empowering media companies to deliver seamless, resilient, and high-performance video across platforms — unlocking new audiences and revenue streams globally.”
