When broadcasters need to reach all viewers across a region, no matter their location, it can be challenging to deliver content to all networks. The new DVB-SIS (Single Illumination System) technology standard resolves this issue by enabling both terrestrial and satellite networks to be fed from a single content source.
Eutelsat implemented the world’s first deployment of DVB-SIS, supporting France Télévisions in broadcasting two 4K channels on both terrestrial and satellite networks. DVB-SIS enables France Télévisions to use a single content source, mutualising satellite capacity to combine distribution to both the terrestrial network backbone (DTT) and Direct-to-Home (DTH) reception.

Satellite has the available bandwidth and extensive reach, to provide extremely popular, premium quality content to all users across vast territories, as well as off-set terrestrial networks for a smooth, consistent viewing experience.

The two channels, France 2 UHD, a full-time channel, and France 3 UHD, a part-time UHD channel dedicated to special events are distributed via the EUTELSAT 5 West B satellite to terrestrial transmitters across the French territory, as well as to DTH audiences via Fransat, the free-to-view satellite platform for French DTT channels.
The new services were launched in advance of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to ensure that all viewers across the French territory can enjoy the 4K quality programmes, no matter where they are located.
